The meditation experience is unique to each one of us. Yet it is variable enough to be exciting time after time. It offers a familiar path of retreat providing refreshment you seek for your entwined emotions and mind and also for your soul.

Our supreme experiences are not of mind or emotions but of our soul. They are usually seen to be generated by our spiritual nature when our consciousness comes to rest at a point of illumination or understanding that replaces previous struggles and searches. These deepest experiences are rare and will be remembered, often for a lifetime.

In whatever degree or guise, realization is always accompanied with a sense of discovering a truth when we find or suddenly ‘see’ or understand a simple solution to a previous complexity or even gain a new perception of old ideas.

In our scale of day to day experiences of realization in our lives, we may suddenly become aware for instance, of the wonder and value of our body and determine to better care for it. We may come to realise the truth of an idea or become acutely appreciative of the beauties of nature.

Spiritual realizations, however, although accompanied by emotional and mental ingredients give rise to a totally new experience which is difficult to describe except in terms of heightened feelings of consciousness of which there seems no limit.

If you have not already identified or remembered highlights of this type in your life it may be interesting to read examples of what some young students have experienced when first practising meditation -

“Meditation is to think of something truthful or to think of God. It helps us to be good. When we think of something of beauty, it helps us to be beautiful. When you think of truth, it helps you to be truthful. Meditation takes practice, time and a real interest in understanding Nature, God and the laws of life that govern us.”

“I originally awoke earlier by the light of the most beautiful moon I’ve ever seen.  It was full and so bright you couldn’t gaze at it for more than a few seconds at a time and even then you had to squint…. I felt I should meditate and sat down to view it and felt bathed in the glow of something bigger than me. I felt blessed…”

“One night I decided to sit down and relax and see how far I could get in meditation. Firstly I let all the muscles in my body relax. Then I started concentrating on my breathing taking deep but rhythmical breaths. When I was sure my breathing was correct, I tried to make my mind relax but I couldn’t, then when I stopped trying to slow my brain down, it did slow down. My body then became very light except in the joints (knees and elbows) where it was still heavy. Then to my surprise, I began to feel smaller and smaller until I felt only 1 cm square. After this, I felt like I was being blown up like a balloon and became very huge and round. It was the most fantastic sensation I have ever felt.”
