Prior to any expression or release of energy, there is a contraction and build-up of reserve energy before that outpouring. This is natural.
However, a build up of energy and no action to release it becomes potential dynamite in the human psyche. Recognition of this condition is known in modern terms as ‘stress’. This build-up of energy without appropriate release can prove detrimental to the nervous system, glandular system, respiratory system, digestion, the heart and the circulatory system. All systems of the body are interfered with when the body is held under tension that is unrelated to the muscular activity or task in hand.
So, when we refer to ‘stress’ it is to unwarranted and extreme tension beyond the degree required in the context of the individual’s actions and circumstances. Stress can refer to physical stress, emotional stress, mental stress or to all three. It is seldom that there is physical stress alone.
As the systems interact is becomes obvious that if one aspect, such as the emotions, are held under strain it is inevitable that the function of mind and body will be detrimentally affected also. We cannot function to optimum to experience total mental unless all three spheres of our nature are in harmony.
To release stress build up, and return to mental fitness and efficiency, we begin by identifying unwarranted muscular tension and learning to release it by training our muscles through conscious, although silent, commands. This may seem to be an elementary but necessary exercise. But all too often we are unaware of the tension we carry, or what simple technique we can use to release it when we discover it.
We then visualise what is happening regarding our emotions and learn to dissolve any unwanted moods and feelings. We learn to employ imagination in retraining our emotional responses to induce feelings of tranquillity.
We observe any anxieties and any fears that disturb our minds and learn to release strain through corresponding relaxation techniques. The result is an effortless state that involves both physical relaxation and peaceful states of mind.
So there are simple, natural methods that can be used to assist us with physical pain or discomfort or psychological relief without the intervention of drugs.
In relaxation classes or in self tutoring – the basic exercise is the same – to assert conscious command over the muscles, and employment of rhythmic breathing to help release emotional and mental stress.
Relaxation is a healing technique so simple and yet so profound. It brings most wonderfully pleasant experiences. Learn it now and you will soon know the feeling of being stress free and return to mental fitness!
